Looks great but very expensive. Since it is around 400 usd, I hope it won't have any qc issue. I concern about its arm/elbow joints, wonder if its 'hands' (ships) can raise to 90 degree horizontal.

considering the continuously rising yen price, this could get very expensive! It was 1 USD = 82 YEN as of yesterday. Having said that, I still want this bad but may have to give it up this time.

I'll probably hold it out since Yamato has a habit of flooding the market, even with exclusives. And yup, the pitiful exchange rate isn't helping out either.

Why does every toy company in Japan have such a raging hard-on for the Do You Remember Battlestar Galactica version? Was that short movie more iconic than the 52 episode series? What the hell...
Because the tv version is the one that resonates with me (and I assume, lots of fans across the generations?). I mean the DYRL one is OKAY, I suppose, but part of the original charm----as a kid----in watching Macross was in seeing a huge freakin' AIRCRAFT CARRIER for a left arm and a transport ship for a right. And then seeing that transport ship get thrown like a right cross into the enemy ship to open up & deliver a devastating barrage of missiles from all the destroids and whatnot.
The visible RED LOWER HULLS clearly indicated to the audience that these were naval ships used as limbs and they weren't afraid to SMACK you with them! Outrageous. I loved it!
The DYRL version is totally neutered. It's like a Stepford Fortress. Did they really think the omission of the water lines would somehow make the SDF-1 more credible? It's already a HUMAN-SHAPED fortress!
I simply cannot believe that there aren't a lot of old and young otaku alike that don't love them some TV-style SDF-1. Maybe there's some contractual shenanigans going on.
Still, I'd like to know ahead of time if they're eventually gonna release a 1/3000 TV Macross. If they are then I'll wait. If not then I might just bite the bullet & get this one.
Then I'll shop around for some 1/3000 ship models & do some surgery....

I think you have to remember to take the bad with the good. Remember the TV version of SDF was also pristine white and bright blue in its colour scheme to go with that red you like so much... It also didn't have a lot of surface detail and was composed mostly of flat panels. So the question then is, do you actually like the bright white and blue as much as the red ship-bottoms?
Kawamori and co. basically sealed the fate of the TV design when they cameo'ed the ship in Macross Plus choosing the hyper-detailed look. It's a tough sell to ask someone to apply the same hyper-detailing from DYRL back to the TV design. Not to mention producing a toy version... might be cool as a cheaper alternative though. Hmm...

(snipped) You'll notice that every Macross series since DYRL has used that version to represent the SDF-1 whenever on screen. I think it's because the creators of Macross consider the DYRL version as the "official look" of the SDF-1.

I can sort of see what you mean but then the colors aren't always interpreted in such starkness. If you google around you can see the white & blue as a more "ghost grey" and "bluish-grey". It also picks up some weathering throughout the series. And it's not the color red I like so much per se, but the fact that it makes them instantly recognizable as naval ships, as opposed to the DYRL arms, which just seem like a copout toward the stylistic conventions of the day. It really does seem like it was a move toward the commercial safety of Starwars/Battlestar Galactica. The arms look like the pods on the 70's Galactica. Not that that's horrible or anything----I like hyper-detailed ships in general but I really do feel that they hit on a timeless classic with the TV SDF-1. It was crazy and had a sense of humor. The individual robots were recognizable as F-14s and the big "mothership" was a giant man-shaped fortress with naval ships for arms. The naval ships really complete it for me. It's what made it unique in the first place. There's also the story and characters that went with it, and the 36 episodes of TV-show memories vs. the less than 2 hrs. of the movie. It was the origin of the franchise as well. Besides, it's been a while since it's been re-done. Wave already did two DYRL SDF-1's, then Yamato did the 1/3000 version. And I don't necessarily think the Macross Plus revisions are written in stone, otherwise there wouldn've have been so many toys of the TV-valkyries alongside their DYRL renditions. Although I do realize that the late 80's & 90's Macross fans have become recent consumers & the early 80's fans have dwindled somewhat, hence the smaller demand. We haven't dissapeared completely, though. Throw as old-old timers a bone once in a while! ;D

I want to wait for how much AmiAmi would charge.... Has anyone here bought from Hobby Search before? I want to know: 1) How's their shipping fees? Is it on the high side or reasonable? I noticed AmiAmi is getting to the high side lately. 2) Do you need to pay when you preorder? It doesn't specify on their website 3) Do they ship fast? AmiAmi is pretty good at that. I never used them before, just want to give myself an alternative as they have a point system that could save some bucks as the YEN is super strong now.

I think the big issue with AmiAmi is that most of us got spoiled by their regular EMS discounts... For a little while back in the spring they kept bumping the expiry date on that offer and we kind of got used to it. For everything else, Amiami tends to be a bit cheaper (but as I say, it's just a trend and not a rule, so buyer beware). They're also usually faster at listing new pre-orders so I'm quite surprised it still hasn't surfaced yet on their site.

Placed order on AmiAmi already... I hope Yamato do a better QC job this time especially the shoulders! Not much luck with their first releases... Taking my chances here.

Graham from Macrossworld says the street date is December 28th.
If you've been following the thread there he posted a little surprise.

Boo! This means I won't have it in time for the holidays. Oh well... guess I'll need to pick up something ridiculous locally and give myself a stocking-stuff gift to play with on X'Mas day at home.

I dunno, I have great difficulty getting enthused for a figure that's twice the price of the DX quarter, no bigger than the quarter, has less diecast than the quarter, and isn't even THE Macross, but is rather the redesigned movie macross with the funky spaceship hands.
We'll see how the figure does, I guess.
