I too broke down and got this! I was very lucky that amiami happened to have a very short-lived restock last week and I was able to order it while it was listed as "back-ordered". I think the backordered status lasted for half a day or so because the very next day it was listed as sold out. Anyways, I got the "your order is ready" email a day later, and have been playing with my SDF-1 the past couple days. So Niko, keep checking amiami or HLJ, you never know if more come in.
I finally managed to put all the screw covers and other tiny parts on last night, and it's magnificent! I am still debating whether to panel-line this thing. I think I will but I'm a little chicken about it due to its high price.
The details are amazing, the transformation smooth, with great QC and no problems. I love how it looks in both mode, but have to say it's more impressive in attacker mode. The pictures don't do it justice because it doesn't show the details. I think panel lining it would make it look even better. I like the stand too, it's sturdy and connects well to the SDF-1, and it even allow you to angle it up in attacked mode. Haven't taken any pictures yet though.
Yes, definitely my TOTY.

I know that HLJ is still taking order even though their stock status says "back ordered", but the Amiami price is still a little bit better than HLJ (plus, for some reason, they seem to ship a lot quicker than HLJ). I really "hate" this, whenever I decide to concentrate in purchasing "chogokin" figures, things like this comes out once in a while and throws me off the track! But I get the feeling that I miss this, there will not be any chance in getting it in the future and I would have to eat the extravagant secondary market prices ;D. I will make my move once my house moving is confirmed at the end of next month, hopefully the larger retailers will have this back in stock again.

Well it does have SOME metal in it so you shouldn't feel too bad.

Yup. The main frame is metal, If I remember correctly. From what I read/see in the reviews, Yamato places metal parts in the correct places which supports the transformation properly.

... MOST of the time, anyway. The fragile V2 VF-1 shoulders spring to mind... Mine has not give any problem... yet. I managed to scratch the white paint on the metal chest part for being impatient and forcing the leg sockets to lock Must be my lucky day ;D

To be fair, the problem metal pins in the early V2 VF-1 was a mistake that was corrected (and although Yamato never admitted it was a bad decision on their part, they did change for later releases). Yup... they changed from metal pins to... a different metal pin.

From what I read, that price is for the broken cannon parts and photoetch pieces ONLY. $200 for some stubs and some printed metal... yikes.

Hm. Perhaps I shall take back what I said about the price, if this is the case: Check that small print. "The kit consists of of the entire SDF-1 and 2 bonus resin parts" So that kit might actually be an entire un-assembled SDF-1, assuming it's not deceptive advertising. That might actually be worth it, especially for those interested in painting and detailing the rather bland base unit, though it depends on how much of a coal raking people would take getting it from the Yamato webshop. Bah. That's what I get for copy and pasting my own posts from other forums. Fixed, thanks for the heads-up Chen.

Great news! If HLJ ends up selling this unassembled kit I'll definitely get one of these

I'd consider getting one if I can get it for around $200 shipped but that'll never happen unless it goes on sale an considering I think this is a web exclusive that'll never happen either. To bad, I would have customized it to look more like the Macross Plus version which had a bit of red in it and paint it white and blue like the tv version.
