Really great to see the actual parts after the graphics . I think personally I'd go with smooth , the silver coating finish looks too much like one of these Games Workshop tabletop miniatures. They are cool, but not for a robot imo. Plus the finish is much smoother on the resin and can give you a more 'toyish' look if that's what you're after, but also a detailed one depending on how you want the figure to look. Looking forward to see the progress, keep it up

BTW, I only sand away the the big ridges where the two pieces of the mold connect, not all those little ridges from the 3D printing.
When I first get the 3D printed part I try to sand the whole thing as smooth as possible, but once I start casting pieces I only smooth out the the big stuff. Otherwise you could spend the rest of your life sanding, and it's bad enough just sanding the initial 3D printed parts.

I think the silver won't look so industrial once the contrasting colors are applied.

but if you do the touch ups on the silver parts to fix it then your actually better off painting them than printing them just to save time and resources. so i guess for this resin is the best choice. I just re-read your post and maybe I should clarify that both the silver coated resin and the regular resin are resin casts of the same 3D printed part. The silver powder brings out the texture of the printed part, even when sanded, because the silver is so glossy, whereas the un-coated resin is very flat and so the texture looks very smooth. I only use a single 3D printed part for each single piece and then make my mold and resin cast to make multiples. It's incomparably cheaper to resin cast pieces than it is to 3D print, so I only 3D print one of each piece. ah now i see, ok then.

That's the best way to do it... 3D print your parts and use them as master templates to cast resin copies from them. Just like you would make a resin copy fom an original toy part. zozo-mag but if you do the touch ups on the silver parts to fix it then your actually better off painting them than printing them just to save time and resources. so i guess for this resin is the best choice. Got most of my black parts molded this weekend and have done a few test castings. I'll put up pics on Friday. The only really big things I have left are the wings, which I still need to print up and mold.

Here's a couple of shots of dyed cast pieces. These are raw right out of the mold and pics are low quality, but enjoy! This head looks bigger than it is because I have girls hands, so probably smaller than it looks here.

That thing is bad, I want one Thanks! Hopefully I'll put out some kind of limited edition of this figure in the next few months. I wish I had more time to get this moving quicker. It will happen, but it might be awhile before I actually have a sell-able version. I just don't have that much free time with my job, unfortunately.

how are you gonna do the green visor? transparent or solid green? I wish I could do a real transparent green visor, but it's a very small area, so I'm planning on painting it with a neon green color.

My collecting room is starting to look like a small extremely messy shop. I have a chair sitting in the middle of the room completely surrounded by a compressor, drill press, various hand tools, boxes, figures, and hundreds of little bits of stuff. There is a small cleared path that leads to the door. My wife has stayed away from this room for a couple of years now, but now my cat won't even come into the room anymore.

I can soooo relate!!! My work shop is the same!!!

I seriously need an actual shop instead of a spare room. I'm having to rearrange stuff every time I change from one activity to another just to clear up space! Lol. It's getting crazy.

My room is so small I wish I had Any more space to do my work, Period! Even now, just to sand a block of balsa, I'd have to do it on my lap or outside in my backyard! lol

Im going to put in more shelves and hopefully clear up some space.

So I'm going through the learning curve of painting these parts which has it's challenges. There are a lot of straight lines and very small detail areas. I'm using Privateer P3 acrylics and then doing a clear acrylic top coat. Hopefully I can have some new pics up soon.
