Bro, I kiss the keyboard your fingers type on! If that new 3D printing service cannot teach me about technical stuff such as Wall Thickness, I will give up 3D printing. That new service you found looks like there is hope for me to learn the math and science of 3D printing, finally, after several failed attempts in the past. Thanks for sharing that info!!! zozo-mag I'm trying out a new printing service. Ponoko raised their prices awhile ago and I've now found www.imaterialise.com has by far the best pricing for high resolution prints that I've yet found. From what I've read they've been around for more than a decade and do the 3D print work for just about everybody in commercial prototyping. They are located in Europe, but their shipping in extremely reasonable.

Thanks! I should be receiving the 3D prints for the wings in the mail sometime around the Nov. 1st. Hopefully I'll have an update sometime within the next month.

I just Haaad to take another look at this fine specimen and quote the images. This is truly a genius and unique work of art, totally original by concept and imagination. It's definitely a highlight to this aspect of the hobby. This also reminds me of the custom RoboCain made and machined by that one RJ member (damn, I can't remember his name!) a couple years back. Anyway, if you're still working on this, I look forward to seeing the finished TZ figure! zozo-mag Here are some pics of an almost finished TZ. This has been the "practice" figure. There are still quite a few unfinished things on it: no barrels tips on smaller guns, various parts are either unpainted or I tested colors and finishes on them that I'm not going to use, and the biggest missing part is that there are no wings obviously. I'm modifying the wings and haven't sent them to the printer yet because I want to be sure that I'm happy with the design before printing. He currently weighs in at 475 grams. He is almost all plastic, but solid. Yes, my camera skills suck. Disco

Thanks Magengar, but hopefully one of these days as things slowly move along I will have a much better specimen. This has been the Frankenstein first casting to expermient on as I've tried different glues, paints, dyes in the resin, etc. to see what I like best, but as time permits I will have some other that are much more "finished" so speak. Oh, and a comic book!

Being the first more extensive project I've done, having people offer up encouragement helps a lot. I'm working on his comic book, but one of these days I'll have an actual finished version of the figure with all the details, correct paint, colors, finish etc.

Yeah, I hope so. I want to put something out there if only to say that I made some small contribution to my favorite hobby. But when this will happen could be awhile unfortunately. Making one robot takes some time and some room, but making multiples, even if it's just like ten, takes more than I might have thought. It's the same old story we face with our hobbies... need more time, more space, more stuff... etc. But it will get there.

I just have to express how excellent my experience with imaterialise.com has been. Their "prime gray" material is the best printing material I've yet used. It's super high resolution and it both sands and tools easy. It's the best material I've worked with so far. And I should mention again that their shipping is fairly cheap. The site actually calculates UPS costs based upon weight instead of a flat fee.

I'm thinking of changing my thigh/knee design. I liked my other knee design as it looked on screen, but I don't like it as much in model form. So I'm thinking of going with this...

I've been wondering how sturdy is 3d printed plastic compared to abs on our figures. It all depends on the 3D process and what resin or filament is used. Some of it is as strong or stronger than most abs plastic, but not always. Clear parts tend to be more brittle. Also if you look at the white printed parts of mine, they chip easily. The green hand parts and the gray wing parts are fairly strong. Most of the common white or black material used in SLS printing is really strong but not great at capturing detail. For the next while I plan on using the imaterialise.com material called "prime gray". It's stronger than most high detail stereolithography SLA materials but not as expensive. Great for details and great for figures.
