So obviously, the next chapter had to be the one where Musashi becomes a getter team member. It's also the last chapter in this first half of the story, which is interesting: the team isn't complete until halfway through the plot in the manga, while in the anime all the pilots are present from day 1. Again, the formula for this chapter is pretty standard. Gore sends a new mechasaurus, and Getter Robo goes to fight it. For the ones that have seen the Neo Getter vs Shin Getter OVAs, do you remember that giant jellyfish-looking mechasaurus that was able to absorb energy from attacks to grow in size? That's the one in this chapter, and is defeated in a similar manner This afternoon I'm buying the second volume of the manga, containing the second half of the story. Now that the team is complete, I wonder what will happen next...

Hehe, if you think Ryoma is a psycho, I'd like to know what you think of Hayato Hayato makes Ryoma seem reasonably normal, let's just put that way. Funnily enough, they kind of go the opposite ways; Ryoma starts out as your typical antisocial misfit street brawler type and goes completely bonkers as the story progresses, while Hayato starts out as a complete nut and becomes a Saotome stand-in type by the time of the events of Go.

I like how Musashi/Benkei (I can't remember if it was both of them) sings the intro to the anime every now and then Kinda speaks of their attitude in general.

Thanks S_Gokin tetsuryu yep, Musashi sings the intro song (sometimes the outro) when he's happy about something, hehe. So cheerful. Reading through the second (and last) volume now. Right after the fight with the giant jellyfish-mechasaurus, the getter team doesn't even get a chance to sleep and regain forces, because a pair of reptile-men have broken into the lab, with the intent of destroying the getter machines. Musashi gives his best to defend the base, but ends up injured in the process. One of the enemy agents manages to escape and reunite with the rest of his fellows, a group of "outcast" reptile-men, their leader named Neon. You might remember him, from the Neo Getter vs Shin Getter OVAs: he carried out an attack with the proto-getters in the Saotome Lab. We also see professor Shikishima in this chapter, again another character that also appears in those OVAs. Anyway, Neon's mechasaurus starts bombing the lab, and Ryoma decides to go kamikaze on him, loading the Eagle with bombs. But just before he launches, Hayato and Musashi (with his chest still spilling blood from the fight) show up: better die fighting than hiding. The fight is long and tedious, Musashi passes out during the battle and at the end the Getter Team wins by a very small margin. So, all in all, a good chapter, even if it follows the basic formula. The next chapter was different: way more action-oriented than the previous one. The machine land of the Dinosaur Empire emerges from the sea and immediately starts pumping out toxic gases, which would overtime turn the atmosphere into a deadly mixture, killing all humans on Earth. Needless to say, Getter Robo launches and heads towards the new menace. And from this point on... the chapter basically becomes an 80's action movie Really, I'll sum it up for you: Getter 1 reaches the machine land, it quickly dispatches the mechasaurus that were defending it, Gore tries to shoot the Getter down via magma cannons (MAGMA CANNONS), Ryoma dodges the attack via "open-get manouver", the ships fly underwater and combine to Getter 2, which then infiltrates into the enemy base via the factories' cooling system, gets inside and wreaks havoc, killing a few extra mechasaurus along the way, changes to Getter 3 and reaches the mechasaurus production facilities, launches all the getter missiles it has left and rains hell on dem basterds, changes again to Getter 1, gets to the nuclear power plant and destroyes the atomic reactor with one precise getter beam shot, and finally proceeds to re-enact the scene in Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi, when the Millennium Falcon is flying out the exploding Death Star II... Well, of course a small part of the Dinosaur Empire detaches before it's too late, so Gore is still alive (for now). Also, this is the chapter in which the getter machinegun is introduced. And it's a beast! So big that Getter 1 needs both hands to operate it (it's bigger than the ones you see in Armageddon). Oh and the machinegun uses mechasaurus-seeking missiles as ammunition. Heh. Well, that's it for now, onto the final chapters now.

That's called the Missile Machine Gun. Huh. Makes sense. It isn't called anything really, in the manga, so I assumed its name was Getter Machinegun or something similar. Thanks.

Done! I finished reading the Getter Robo manga Lots of things happened in these 4 last chapters. Also, the end of this manga ties in (more or less) with the Neo Getter VS Shin Getter OVAs, so if you've seen them I won't spoil much here. Otherwise... I'll try not to go too much into details First off, the Dinosaur Empire attacks a city by creating killer tornadoes, Getter Robo is sent to destroy the new enemy base. Ryoma gets severely injured while trying to save a citizen, and, unable to control Getter 1 properly, he decides to open-get, so that at least Hayato and Musashi could survive the imminent explosion. The two manage to escape, but Ryoma is nowhere to be seen, days pass and he's presumed dead. But one day a mysterious assassin tries (unsuccessfully) to kidnap Dr. Saotome, whom recognizes Ryoma in the attacker. Hayato and Musashi then follow the man all the way to a hospital in a nearby city, where they find out that not only Ryoma's, but also many other people's minds were controlled by the chief scientist of the... *drums roll* ONI EMPIRE. Otherwise known as the Empire of the 100 Demons. For those of you who don't know, this empire is the main antagonist in the Getter Robo G show, but here in the manga they appear in the first arc. Awesome. They don't do much in the meantime though, I guess this can be considered a sort of introduction to the next enemy. Anyway, Ryoma is freed from the mind control of the baddies, but the Getter Team soon finds out that our poor hero suffers amnesia, so he's taken to the Saotome lab to begin a therapy that will allow him to regain his memories. Meanwhile, Oni emperor Burai has a lovely chat (sarcasm) with Gore, which in turn decides to invade Japan with all the remaining mechasaurus forces at once. Yay. Time is running out, the dinosaurs are already blasting the lab to pieces and Ryoma doesn't even remember how to pilot a get machine. So Musashi, a true man among men, takes the ultimate decision: buy some time for his teammates and for Dr. Saotome, by piloting Getter Robo alone and going Kamikaze on those reptiles. This scene is darn similar to the one portrayed in the beginning of Neo Getter VS Shin Getter: Musashi lets the mechasaurus surround him, then he detonates his getter reactor, wiping the enemy out of existence. The shock of his friend sacrificing his life is so intense that Ryoma regains his memory. Gore is so happy that Getter Robo was finally defeated, that he decides to start Japan's invasion personally, aboard his airship. The reptile emperor reaches the remains of the Saotome Lab, little did he know that Getter Robo G was waiting for him, the new Getter that could be completed only thanks to Musashi's sacrifice. Gore falls into the trap, and is cornered by the super robot, unable to return to his empire, which is now retreating back into Earth's magmatic depths. Gore is killed, but now the Getter Team must face a new menace, the Empire of the 100 Demons. Though, this will happen in the next manga series So, I quickly summed up the last chapters. I'll let all the "information" settle before writing down my final thoughts on this story.

I'm not complaining too much though, grim well-animated action can compensate for a made-up story. It'll just make the purists angry, hehe. Also, by the late 90's I doubt that a "traditional" super robot show would've been successful. The originals though? The Getter shows from 1974 and 1975 are old school. If you've seen Mazinger Z, or Grendizer, or whatever from those years, you know what to expect. ...hey, maybe the Shin Getter OVAs were inspired by Evangelion. That was dark as f**k. And the studio responsible for those OVAs must have thought that dark=success. Heh, it doesn't work like that.

@ tetsuryuHeh, me neither. I'm following the re-prints of the manga series here in Italy, it will take some months before we get to the most recent ones. For now, they've announced Getter Robo G and Getter Robo Go, so I'm waiting for them to come out. +++ Anyway, final thoughts, final thoughts... Let's start talking about what I know about the author(s): Ken Ishikawa was a pupil and great friend of Go Nagai, he was also a member of Dynamic Productions from the very start. Getter Robo was created by both Nagai and Ishikawa, Nagai worked on the story and Ishikawa on the drawings. Though, I think 2 different people made the drawings for this Getter Robo manga, even if one of them just did so for 2 chapters: this person was not very good at drawing people ad people's faces in general, but was very skilled at drawing robots and robotic parts, because of al the detail he put into his drawings. The person who drew almost all of the manga, on the other hand, was skilled in portraying natural landscapes and urban environments, and had a way of drawing people reminiscent of Go Nagai's style: simple lines and a lack of detail, very good at conveying emotions to the reader. However, his Getter Robo and mechasauruses were drawn in a much simpler way. Not that that's a bad thing, but it just can't compare to what the other person was able to give us when it comes to robot scenes. I wonder who these people were though. Maybe both Nagai and Ishikawa collaborated in drawing this first installment, though I'm not sure. Story-wise, it's solid. It's fairly standard generally (evil empire dude wants to take over the world, and our heroes must kick robot butts and save the day), so I didn't expect much in that area. What got me were the protagonists: not so much later in the story, since apparently living at the lab acts like "zen therapy", but in the beginning both Ryoma and Hayato are practically anti-heroes. Very satisfying to read. It's basically what made me like Tetsuya Tsurugi from the Great Mazinger manga: while Koji was more of your standard chosen hero and Duke Fleed your standard amnesic hero, Tetsuya was an anti-hero (most of the time). Another thing was the robot fights. You know I'm a fan of Getter Robo (just look at my profile pic), but why do I like it so much? Apart from the fact that it is the first combiner, I mean. Well, I like it because of its versatility. Because of its ability to adapt to any situation encountered. Now, there aren't many robot fights in the manga (not as many as in the anime, I mean), but in those fights it's always cool to see them "change" to better confront their enemies. It is more spectacular in the manga, but at the same time it is less used, so you can' appreciate it as much as you do in the anime. Really, in the manga you see Getter 2 just 3-4 times, and Getter 3 only twice. All the other times it's always Getter 1's time to shine. Oh well. As I was saying, the robot fights. They're bloody, and gory. You know how the mechasauruses in the anime are just piloted robots shaped like giant dinosaurs with... things attached to them? Well, some of the ones in the manga are the same, but just some of them: the majority of mechasauruses in the manga are actually cyborg dinosaurs, and they're autonomous, they're living creatures, and they fight more istinctively. Well, I'd better stop talking about random things and cut it short: the anime is longer and has got more action going, but it is a quantity-over-quality issue. The manga is much more condensed, has less fights which are more entertaining, and the characters and protagonists have more interesting personalities. Boiled down, those are the main differences. Which one is better? It realy depends on what your tastes are. Like classic super robot shows from the 70's, go for the anime. Liked Armageddon more than the old thing? Go for the manga. Armageddon has a completely made-up story but it has the feel of the manga.

Thanks genki99, glad you like it!
Mini-update: yesterday I bought the full volume of the Getter Robo G manga (came out last week). It continues and concludes the events of this first "writing phase", Ken Ishikawa resumed the Getter story only some years later, with Getter Robo Go.
I shall, as I've done for the first issues, read and examine the chapters in this volume to give you an insight. After that, I think I'll take a pause and wait for all the Getter Robo Go issues to come out before starting to go through them.

A'right, read the first chapter in the book. There's not many chapters in total (5 or 6), I suspect this is going to be quite a condensed story.
Originally, this wasn't a separate manga: both Getter Robo's and Getter Robo G's stories were written under the common name of Getter Robo. And in fact, the events are just progressing after the demise of the Dinosaur Empire, there are no timeskips nor anything like that.
The chapter begins with our heroes reading the newspaper, while Benkei Kuruma, the newbie, is practicing a bit on the Poseidon Machine (that's right, he gets almost no introduction at all). Meanwhile, someone comes to the lab looking for Hayato: it's his old school pals, the ones from the terrorist student movement he founded, who are now under the guidance of Hayato's cousin, Ryuji. Ryuji tries to convince Hayato to leave the lab and join them once again, but Jin refuses, so the two engage in a fight: here we find out that not only Ryuji, but all of Hayato's ex comrades now have machine bodies! They were all transformed into demons by the Oni Empire and, thanks to their enhanced strength and agility, knock out Hayato and kidnap him.
While at the enemy base the two cousins have a good ol' family conversation, Benkei and Ryoma manage to chase and capture one of the demons, and bring him back to the lab. Now both parts have a prisoner, so Ryuji decides to take Hayato to the lab, and then challange Getter Robo to a fight: if the demons win, then Hayato will join them and become a demon himself. The fight begins, with Benkei and Ryoma piloting Getter Dragon, and... almost immediately the onis get the upper hand. Seriously, 4 demons jump in the air, join hands and become a giant throwing star (like the ones ninjas use), start spinning, head towards Getter Dragon and cut off its right arm. And that was just 4 guys, there were a hundred more just enjoying the show there.
Though, not for long. Ryuji ordered the group to form King Oni. Immediately, every demon jumps in the air and transforms into a mechanical component, which then start combining to form a giant robot, with Ryuji inside the head controlling the whole ensemble. Needless to say, Getter Dragon doesn't last 3 pages against that monstruosity, but Hayato asks Ryuji if he thinks he fought against the real Getter Robo: after all, Getter can use 100% of its power only when all 3 pilots are present. Ryuji agrees and sets Hayato free so that he can try to prove him wrong. Hayato gets on his Getter Machine and then changes into Getter Liger, trying to counter the enemy robot's strength with speed. However, Hayato underestimates the enemy's power: King Oni is in fact capable of fighting even when his body is not fully combined. Not only each section (like head, limbs, etc.) but also every single man-sized component is independent, and can move freely through the air at incredible speeds.
This is bad news for the Getter Team, as Getter Liger gets pummeled by a swarm of steel. Hayato's attacks prove ineffective, as each time he tries to hit King Oni, the enemy mecha just disassembles into tens of tiny pieces which quickly re-combine somewhere else and take Getter Robo off guard. But Hayato has finally understood: he held back the whole time, just because he knew that what he was attacking were his cousin and all of his highschool friends. But they were not humans anymore, they were just puppets controlled by the Oni Empire. And Hayato finally finds the strength to put an end to their suffering.
As King Oni disassembles once again, Hayato open-gets and tells Benkei and Ryoma to stay inside the swarm of components. Once the re-attachment process begins, the team changes into Getter Liger inside the enemy robot, preventing him from completely assembling and, as Hayato bids farewell to all those people he knew for so long, he shoots a Jet Drill upwards, piercing the mecha's head and thus destroying him.
*sips water*
Well gentlemen, I hope you liked the story. A similar episode happened in the Getter Robo G tv series, when a childhood friend of Hayato gets tricked by the Oni Empire into becoming a demon, the two fight and Getter wins (obviously) but it is a bitter victory.

Chapter 2 of Getter Robo G is again another standard monster-of-the-week episode just like the ones you'd get watching the TV show. The premise is simple: dr. Saotome, along with his sons Michiru and Genki, is invited to a party held at the tallest skyscraper in Japan, where other important people will be present. Saotome takes Hayato with him, as a bodyguard, and leaves Benkei and Ryoma to defend the lab while he's absent. Needless to say, the Onis are plotting to take down Doc and the Getter Team, and this time it's Emperor Brai himself who comes to the frontlines: one of his scientists has informed him that the new mechanical beast is ready, and that beast is... the skyscraper where doc and Hayato are heading. Yup, the plan of the Onis is to take all of the people at the party, including Saotome and Hayato, as hostages, so that Getter Robo won't attack them. Brai takes control of the building, locks all the doors and starts activating traps "Raiders of the Lost Ark" style, like spikes coming through the ground, electrified walls, lasers, poisonous gas and falling chandeliers. Classic. While Hayato tries his best to keep Doc and himself alive, things ain't going much better at the lab, where another Oni beast has appeared. Ryoma and Benkei, fearing something bad happened to their friends, quickly launch with the Getter Machines. This beats which is attacking the lab was kinda wimpy, honestly.. even with Hayato missing, Benkei manages to defeat it in mere seconds, with a nice technique: Getter Poseidon starts charging, then Liger Machine (the legs) detach and Dragon Machine activates its engines to accelerate the upper half of the body towards the enemy. Then Dragon separates, and Poseidon Machine (head n upper torso) gets an additional boost, before shooting one of the Strong Missiles it has loaded on the back. With the projectile travelling at such a high speed, the mechanical beast is taken by surprise and destroyed: Ryoma and Benkei can finally go save their friend. And then something amazing happens. I still laugh when I think about it... well, let's say that, once Getter Team reaches the skyscraper, Benkei checks the situation from the outside, while Ryoma decides to look for Hayato entering the building, getting to the 70th floor using the stairs. While inside his Getter Machine. You read right pal, Nagare "Batsh*t-crazy" Ryoma climbs 70 floors of a building using the staircase without even getting out of freaking Dragon, while making perfect 90° turns and avoiding the walls all the way up. And I know, that defies the laws of physics, I know that, but it gets worse. You see, Getter Machines are big (specially the ones that form Getter Robo G), and that leaves us with 2 options: either that staircase was as wide as the building itself, or Dragon Machine shrinked down to the size of a motorcycle, and Ryoma down to the size of a wallet. You choose Anyway, the two find Hayato, who swiftly gets into his Liger. Once the team combines, the real Oni beast appears, coming out of the building. And even if that thing was huge (Getter Dragon was as big as its head) it was also disappointingly weak. Or maybe Getter is just over-powered, who knows. Case in point, Getter Dragon tore off the head of the beast just by pulling it. Heh. Well, that was the second chapter, which was less engaging than the first one. Even though the staircase scene made up for it

Now here's a nice surprise: the third chapter not only was one of the better drawn (so, probably drawn by Ishikawa), but it also went on with the story and explained some things, so it wasn't just another monster-of-the-week fight A little premise before we start. Have any of you watched the Shin VS Neo OVAs? Because in this chapter appears a spaceship which is practically identical to the one you see in the last OVA of the series, the one mecha-Gore controls (only difference, Gore is not piloting this one since he's, well, dead). Alright, so a giant spaceship emerges from beneath a mountain, in Japan, and the Getter Team is sent there to see what's going on. Upon reaching the UFO, a strange robot comes out of the spacecraft, and by its looks it was not created by the Onis. Looked more like a giant insect-thing, really. Anyway, the robot engages in combat with Getter Dragon, the two have a good match, but ultimately Getter wins. And that's when tens and tens of other robots like the one that just got destroyed exit the giant saucer. Not so cocky now, eh Ryoma? Not only that, but from the sky above the battle something else appears, a different spaceship: the Oni Empire. Emperor Brai, with the confidence of a man that has already won the fight (classic), starts explaining to our heroes where that spaceship came from, and who the Onis really are. Quite some important stuff, which is not explained at all in the anime Long, long ago, a technologically-advanced extraterrestrial civilization had to flee from their planet, which was being destroyed, and to do so they used hundreds of spaceships, with the objective of reaching a new world. Unfortunately, some of these ships suffered malfunctions along the way, and 2 of them crash-landed on Earth, long before the advent of Man. Fast-forward some million years, just a few years after WWII, a Japanese team of scientists goes to the south pole to explore the ruins of a mysterious alien-looking structure: it was one of the two arks that reached Earth in the past. One of the crewmembers of the expedition finds a room with a big horned brain in the center: the brain interacts with the scientist, giving him all of the information it posessed and transforming him into the first Oni, Brai. The Emperor would shortly thereafter turn all of his crewmates into other Onis, which would slowly continue the process with other people all over Japan, while at the same time fixing and repairing the spaceship so that it could fly again: that ship found at the south pole would later become the Oni Empire, their HQ, and the robots it contained were turned into Oni Beasts. However, Brai knew that a second ship landed somewhere else, and he wanted to utilize the combat robots that it contained. For 20 years the Onis searched for it, until they finally found it in Japan: that's the saucer that appeared just at the beginning of the chapter. Brai wanted to fuse his brain with the one inside the second ship, to obtain its power too and finally take over the world, and the Getter Team knew that if Brai took control of all those alien mechas, Getter Robo would've had no chance against them. So they decide to kamikaze on the thing, all or nothing. They launch Getter Dragon into a nosedive to get there quickly, avoiding the occasional defense robots open-getting along the way, then they combine into Getter Liger just before hitting the mothership and drill their way through the spacecraft, wreaking as much havoc as possible and destroying the control brain, thus ruining Brai's plan. Not only that. To make sure that the thing stays dead and nobody tries to repair it and use it for world domination again, Getter Poseidon finishes the job by launching a Strong Missile into the saucer. A few moments later the ship explodes, Getter Team going back to the lab and the Oni Empire retreating, Brai swearing he'll get his revenge on Getter Robo. So, this chapter was a little different huh? We got some background on who the Onis are and how they got here, pretty neat stuff. Such a pity they didn't explain anything in the anime..

Read the fourth chapter, so we only have 1 left before finishing the story. It's gotta be said, this Getter Robo G manga was quite short. Only 5 chapters in total, and some of them could be considered "fillers". Just like this one, hehe.
The chapter begins with a fighter jet falling from the sky (due to a mechanical problem, we're told) and attempting an emergency landing in a wood near a small village. Little did the folks know, that jet was transporting a biological weapon: the bacteria spread quickly and in a matter of minutes almost all the people in the village die a terrible death. Only a young kid survives, but a pair of figures, wearing hazmat suits and wielding flamethrowers, find the boy and try to kill him. Luckily, Ryoma was loafing around the place with his motorbike, and saw the whole scene.
Ryoma kills the two agents, but immediately afterwards an Oni airship appears in the sky and drops down a giant robot, which was given the task of finding the crashed plane and bringing it back to the empire. Ryoma contacts the Lab, and his pals launch with the Getter Machines, reach the woods and take Ryoma and the wounded kid on board, then get ready to battle the Oni beast. And the fight is very, very short guys. Getter Dragon just punches through the basterd, the enemy doesn't even try to fight back. That's when the team begins to think that maybe that beast wasn't a fighting robot, but maybe just a "probe" sent there to find something. Also, Ryoma notices that the kid's conditions are getting worse, so they decide to go back to the Lab and treat him.
Here they find out that the poor guy was infected by an unknown bacterium, and after a bit of brainstorming the Getter Team understands that the Oni Empire produced the pathogenic agent, but then the carrier crashed into the village while transporting it, so know they we're searching it to get it back and most probably use it to kill all the people on Earth. Getter Robo launches again, the team hoping that they could still make it. Fortunately, they do: when they reach to the place, the Onis haven't found the plane wreck yet, and Getter Dragon engages in combat with the Oni airship. General Hidler tells the Getter Team that the Oni Empire didn't manufacture the bacterium, the humans did, modifying a pathogen found inside a meteorite. Despite the shock this revelation caused to the Getter Team, Ryo still manages to find the strength to beat the airship. The team returns to the Lab, facing a moral dilemma: is it worth to fight for people who constantly try to kill each other?
Meanwhile, the Oni Empire does not waste time, and is already preparing a special mechanical beast, designed specifically to take down the Saotome Lab in a single hit: a giant missile, piloted by a giant robot. Again, Getter Robo launches for the third time in a chapter (it's probably a record) and heads to intercept the warhead-beast that's coming straight to the Lab. The enemy is travelling at mach 5, speeds Getter Dragon can't reach, so Ryoma comes up with a different way to stop the beast: he'll let it pierce through Getter Robo, that way the Oni mecha won't be able to dodge his attacks. Luckly, the plan works out well: Benkei is left at the lab, Hayato pilots Poseidon Machine while Liger Machine is controlled by the autopilot. The team forms Getter Dragon, which gets rammed by the Oni Beast: the enemy bores a hole through Liger, currently unmanned, and Ryoma discharges a Getter Beam on the enemy, destroying its control circuits. Just before the whole thing comes crashing to the ground, Ryoma and Hayato open-get, escaping to safety, the missile exploding behind them. Since only Liger Machine got destroyed in the operation, not much was lost and the Lab will be able to build a new one soon. The end.
So, next time will be the final chapter. It'll take me more time than usual to sum it up, mainly because it's without a doubt the longest chapter in the book, and is very story-rich. So I'll probably need to read it twice, hehe.
