And of course, I completely forgot to sum it up I was actually going to post here for a quick update regarding the re-printing of the Getter mangas here in Italy: the publisher has revealed their schedule for the rest of 2015, more Nagai stuff is coming, they'll even start printing Grendizer Giga, hehe. I won't buy it though, I'll just keep the classic. Also, they said that they should be able to reprint all the remaining Getter Robo mangas by the end of the year, that includes Getter Robo Go, Shin Getter Robo, Getter Robo Ah (Ark) and Getter Robo Hien - The Earth's Suicide (this last one though, I won't buy it, since it wasn't made by Ishikawa). More specifically, Getter Robo Go will be completely ready by June, Shin Getter sometime during the summer and Getter Ah during fall. So, if all goes well, I'll be done with this series of summaries/reviews by the end of the year Ok, now for the last chapter of the manga Getter Robo G. +++ Story starts with a truck being chased and attacked by some dudes on motorcycles. For some reason this truck is carrying something which must be delivered to the Saotome lab, and, luckily for the driver, Ryoma passes by with his motorcycle and takes down the thugs, which turn out to be Onis. The truck was transporting a giant robot head, which is immediately taken to the lab, along with the wounded driver. Here, he tells our heroes what happened: he was working as an assistant for an archeologist who decided to uncover the mystery of the ancient civilization of Atlantis. The group of experts, led by said archeologist, descended into a cave somewhere in the Atlantic ocean and finally reached some old ruins, guarded by what seemed to be a gigantic mechanical statue. The professor translated the hierogliphs on the walls of the temple, and found out that the name of the robot guardian was Uzahra, constructed millenia ago by the inhabitants of Atlantis. Also, Uzahra was also responsible for sinking the whole continent of Atlantis down to the ocean floor, as a way of protecting its people's secrets for the longest time possible. Scary stuff. Of course, the Oni Empire took over the place as soon as the news spread, and the Archeologist's assistants were only able to detach Uzahra's head from the main body and take it to Japan, hoping that the Saotome Lab had the necessary equipment to destroy it. That way, the mechanical monster would never wake up again. (By the way, this head is very very similar to Grendizer's one, just a fun fact). Meanwhile, oni emperor Brai sends 3 of his best agents to retrieve Uzahra's head, desperately wanting to use the ancient robot's powers to conquer the world. The 3 onis, each of them piloting his own robot, clash with the Getter Team right above the lab, that is reached by some of the attacks from the fight. This, unfortunately, triggers something inside Uzahra's head, which starts calling for the rest of its body. On the other side of the world, the beast awakens, destroys the old ruins in which it was constrained for so long and emerges from the sea waters: Uzahra's body (and this one is a treat, hehe) is practically identical to Shin Getter Dragon, the one you see in the last episode of Getter Robo Armageddon to be precise. Well, to be fair, Uzahra inspired Shin Dragon's design, I'm absolutely sure about it. A long dragon-like body with the top half of a human-like one on its back. The beheaded body promptly makes its way to Japan, where it reunites with the head. And, immediately afterwards, defeats the Oni beasts without breaking a sweat. Huh. So it is pretty powerful, alright, but is it an enemy or an ally? A sane person would probably try to start a friendly and pacific conversation with the new guy, and try to make friends with it. What does Ryoma do? Decides he won't be waiting for an answer, so he just attacks Uzahra. Or, at least, he tries to. Because an instant later Getter Dragon is already being electrocuted and melted at the same time. Great move there Ryoma, hehe. But Ryoma, being the hotblooded hero that he is, keeps trying and trying and trying, and at a certain point Uzahra speaks (!) asking our hero the reason of such stubbornness. "We fight to protect our future!" says Ryoma. Next thing, Getter Dragon is practically torn apart from the inside out and rendered inoperable. The scrap that once was a fair super robot is then taken by Uzahra who knows where... But all this time, the Oni empire has been watching the fight, and once they saw that Getter Robo was gone for good, Brai immediately ordered to assault Japan with all the Oni military units available, all the mechas, all the aircrafts, even the mothership. In a matter of hours the major cities in Japan are conquered, and the Saotome Lab is slowly but steadily being taken down by Oni forces. But Brai is not so stupid, he knows Uzahra is still around somewhere and he knows he has to deal with it before it's too late, or he might face defeat. So the Oni emperor sends a special division with the task of following and eliminating Uzahra, but how will they do that? And what happened to Getter Robo and our trio of pilots? I'll answer to all these questions tomorrow, let me get some sleep first see, we're only halfway there lads, this is a 200-page chapter! It's really long, when compared to the others. Don't worry, I'll finish this in a few hours, hehe. See ya.

Part 2: Ryoma wakes up in a strange room, he doesn't remember how he got there. Two people show up, claiming to be citizens of Atlantis, and telling Ryoma their story: long time ago, Atlantis was the most advanced civilization on Earth, thanks to their advanced science and technology. One day though, a disease carried by some meteors infected the population, the number of deaths caused by it increased rapidly, and they couldn't find a cure. So they opted to use their last resort, Uzahra: the giant dragon in reality is an ark, keeping all the surviving people of Atlantis in "suspended animation" save for a few who operate the beast. After having completed the evacuation process, the people of Atlantis made the island sink to the bottom of the ocean, where the infection would've stopped spreading. Fast forward some millennia, and the modern society finds Uzahra, which awakens once more, and the rest, well, you know the rest Well, Ryoma apologizes for having fought against them, they seem like nice people after all, right? Wrong. Ryoma is captured and then taken to a surgery room, where Hayato and Benkei are being held as well. The Atlanteans remove masks that have been keeping on, and show their real, rotten faces: they've never been able to fight the disease back, all of their companions are in the same situation, their bodies slowly decaying. They finally decided to transplant their brains in modern people's bodies, that's their only hope of ever being healthy again, sure all the people they'll take the bodies of will die in the process, but these Atlanteans don't care much about it, since they think of us as "barbarians". Not the kind of behaviour you'd expect from the most advanced civilization ever, huh? Suddenly, the group hears explosions happening inside Uzahra. Remember that special squad Brai sent to deal with the beast? Well, they breached inside the body of the giant dragon, planted bombs everywhere and started killing all the slumbering crew, then head to the room where our heroes are. Ryoma and the others have managed to free themselves thanks to the confusion generated by the attack though, and have no problems killing the Onis. The Atlanteans though, they get badly injured and, knowing that their death approaches, they decide to let the Getter Team free, not only that, but they beg the team to eliminate the Onis from the planet, as they were responsible for the complete annihilation of the last survivors of Atlantis: they take our heroes to another room where, lo and behold, we see Getter Dragon, completely repaired and ready to go. With his last words, the last of the Atlanteans asks again the Getter Team to avenge their deaths and stop the Onis from conquering the world. The Onis, yeah, they haven't rested for a single second since Getter Robo was taken away by Uzahra: they already conquered every major city in Japan, killed an incredible amount of people, taken all the survivors as hostages, fought against Japanese and American defense forces both on land, air and sea, and last but not least, they also destroyed Saotome Lab. All of the staff had escaped in an underground bunker beneath the lab, and gets saved just in time by Getter Liger, who then procedes to kill all of the remaining Oni Beasts up on the surface. Also, I should point out that Getter Robo and Uzahra are now something like "best buddies", they fight the enemy robots together and there's just no contest, really. Those 2 are over-powered, hehe. Emperor Brai is facing some difficulties, it seems. He calls back all of the Oni Beasts from around Japan, to defend Tokyo (where the Oni Empire landed) but the groups of mechas get destroyed by Getter and his new pal before even reaching the Japanese capital. So Brai decides to play dirty: he sends all of the hostages out and tells the Getter Team that he will kill them all unless Getter Robo surrenders. But our heroes have a plan: while Uzahra uses its anti-gravity beam to make the Oni Empire float without control in mid-air, Getter Liger comes from below and frees the hostages. Uzahra then moves the Oni Empire all the way up to space, to let the team fight without worrying about damaging anyone or anything near it. Now, the battle starts out pretty easy for our heroes: the giant Oni spaceship is defenseless, and Getter Dragon breaks in effortlessly, wreaking havoc as it makes its way to the control center, where the Oni Emperor is located. Along the way though, a different mecha shows up, piloted by the Oni technology chief. This Oni beast, called Raouki, is essentially the Onis' last resort: a super powerful time bomb, which will destroy both the spaceship and Getter Robo, a way for the Onis to save their honor I guess. With a few seconds left before the explosion, Ryoma shoots a Getter Beam at the wall behind the enemy, the depressurization sucking both robots into outer space. Then, a bright light, Raouki has detonated. Has Getter Robo been defeated? Nope, a figure emerges from the darkness, Getter Dragon is still here and it's ready to kick some demon butts: Ryoma readies a Getter Shine, and then launches it directly to the Oni Empire. SHINE SPARK! A huge explosion engulfs the spaceship, and then everything becomes silent. The Oni Empire is no more. The team has a last favor to ask Uzahra: to take the remains of the enemy spaceship into space, far far away. The giant dragon slowly disappears into the distance along with the wrecked Oni spacecraft, as the Getter Team bids farewell and returns to Earth, home. +++ Phew, done. This concludes the first Getter manga "season", the classic one from 1974-75. Ishikawa took a break after writing and drawing the stories for Getter Robo and Getter Robo G, and he resumed his work only in the 90's, fifteen years later more or less. So, I'll wait for Getter Robo Go to come out before talking about it, "stay tuned" the next manga series should in fact be even more interesting, from what I've read about them. Grimm, darker stories with even more batsh*t-nuts crazyness and awesome mechas (like Shin Getter Robo, or Getter Emperor). In fact, I'm specially interested in learning more about Getter Emperor, the TV series don't really show much, you see a bit at the end of Armageddon, and a bit more in the last episode of the 2004 New Getter Robo anime, but apart from that.. so yeah, definitely hyped about the mangas to come.

Bravo! That was a good read. You have piqued my interest in the Getter Canon. Time to catch up on those episodes. Thanks. Thanks Ultra! Always glad when someone likes my "sum ups" and I'm even afraid that I might bore the reader at times, as it takes me quite a long time to write the whole thing down (for this last chapter I had to read a few pages and write a paragraph, then read a few more and write down some more, etc.) and I try to be careful with the words chosen, trying not to repeat myself too much in the sentences. As I said, glad you liked it. Now the Getter Robo Go manga is coming out in 3 chunky volumes here, I already own the first one, second one should be out next week and the last one should be ready by June. Maybe I'll start reading it before the third volume is published, though, since going through 1500-ish pages without pausing might be overkill

Thanks for the support everyone. Thought I'd post a pair of pics to show you how Uzahra's design is linked to a pair of other robots we know and love First, Uzahra's "top half", which I said resembled Grendizer in some ways. Here's depicted right when the group of archeologists find the Atlantean ruins: The spikes on the central part of the head and the shape of the panels near the mouth particularly. I hope it's not just me, hehe. Next up, a pic of the complete Uzahra, during his fight with Getter Dragon: We're on safe ground here: this is what inspired Shin Dragon's design for the Armageddon OVAs, no doubts I like how this ol' 1975 subject got recycled for a 1998 series.

I've been reading Getter-related stuff n' fluff at the TV Tropes site, specifically here: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manga/GetterRoboAnd I've gotta say, there's a lot more info there than what you'll ever find on Wikipedia. The two most interesting things I learned from the article are: 1) "It's a common misconception that the Getter Robo series is the work of Go Nagai, when in fact it's almost entirely the work of Ken Ishikawa. Go Nagai only pitched the concept of combining jets (as opposed to combining cars, the original idea) to Ishikawa, while the rest was made without his involvement. [...]" So Ishikawa was the one who came up with most of the ideas that defined what Getter Robo is, apparently. I still think Go Nagai played a major "background" role though. I mean, if uncle Go didn't conceive Mazinger Z two years earlier, I doubt that Ishikawa would suddenly think of the idea of the super robot, and make a manga and anime about it. Also, Ishikawa did put Nagai's name next to his in the credits, so most people immediately assumed that this was another robot created by Go Nagai, even if that wasn't really the case. On the other hand, this also helped Ken's work become popular early on, the anime started airing in no time. 2) "Art Evolution: Ishikawa's style in 1974, when he created the original manga, looks almost identical to Go Nagai's. When he revived the series in 1991 with Getter Robo Go his style looked completely different and distinct, with more detail and stronger anatomy. This ends up creating some awkward shifts in the Getter Robo Saga manga compilations, which inserted new bonus chapters in between the original material, meaning the art goes back and forth between Ishikawa's 70's and 90's art styles." This one explains many things. Remember, back when I started reading the mangas, that I thought there were 2 drawers doing the art for it? And that I thought that some chapters were drawn by Ken (the ones with a more detailed artwork) while all the others, with simpler and more "raw" drawings, were made by someone else, possibly Nagai, since they were pals and worked together. Turns out, it was Ken Ishikawa in both cases. Only that the more sophisticated chapters were not done during the original run of the manga! They were included later, as a bonus, during the reprints that no doubt were published during Ken's 2nd writing phase, in the 90's. Ishikawa's artwork really resembled Nagai's one back then, so similar I thought Go himself made the drawings, but nope. Those extra chapters share the Getter Robo Go manga art style, as it should be (just cheked). P.S. two out of three Getter Go volumes acquired, waiting for the last one to come out

Thought I'd update this thread, since I'm almost done collecting the Getter Robot mangas (the ones written and drawn by the original author, at least). I got all of the Getter Go volumes, the Shin Getter volume and I own 1 out of 2 Getter Arc volumes, the second one will probably be published in December. I think. So that's good news, and even better news: I recently finished watching the old Jeeg show, the 1975 one. And.. I'm slightly tired cause watching over 40 episodes of virtually the same events happening over and over and over and over and.. your brain starts asking for a story, and you can't blame it. That's why I decided that before watching the next classic mecha-themed anime (still gotta choose, Reideen or Grendizer) I'd entertan myself with a nice comic book. Or a manga, why not. And with the entirety of Ken Ishikawa's work on the Getters being published by the end of the year, I think it's time I resume and finish my.. analysis, of these stories. The titles I'm going to look at are probably the most interesting ones too, compared to the early Getter works. Better, more complex story arcs and an improved drawing style. I'll try to couple words with pictures, to make the posts a bit "prettier", and also to share the best artwork of the various chapters. Wait till you see Getter Emperor in all its might, haha I'll start one of the next few days, tomorrow if possible. This is going to take a while, but I already know I'll enjoy it and it will be worth my time. Stay tuned fellas!

Getter Robot Go - Chapter 1The story begins with a scene many of you might be familiar with: in the first OAV of Shin Getter VS Neo Getter, right after the opening credits, we see a random dude from the army trying to pilot Test Machine 2 and having some problems with the G-forces.. Machines 1 and 3 approach and try to perform the combination to save the poor guy, but something goes wrong and the young soldier dies in the accident. The scene in the manga is more gruesome that the one from the OAV: in the latter, Machine 2 fails to dock properly, flips and explodes in a puff of smoke, while here the jet gets crushed. Kinda like what happened to Michiru and the Poseidon Machine in the Armageddon OAVs. Ugh Scene cuts to a sport stadium where some athletic events are taking place. Here we see one of our protagonists, Ichimonji Go, representing his school while taking part in the various races and competitions. His teacher doesn't stop scolding him though, in his opinion Go is underperforming for some reason. And that's not just the gym teacher thinking that: ol' Jin Hayato has been observing Go for quite a while now, and has decided to see if he may be a good Getter Team member candidate. Go's strength, agility and reflexes are put to test in a brief fight against Hayato's goons, after which he manages to escape the stadium and return home. But problems seem to have just begun for Go, cause after a few minutes a monstruously huge man is seen heading towards his house, and then.. this happens: This mofo is not normal. Period. He gets to Go's place, takes out a pair of machine guns from underneath his coat and opens fire on everything, thankfully Go is upstairs so he's not injured at the moment. Well, the giant starts looking for him, but Go catches him unguarded and swings a metal baseball bat to his face, with all his might. And.. not even a bleeding nose. The monster just stands there smirking, while Go keeps smacking it with his bat over and over, till it becomes a bent mess. The giant overpowers Go easily, a single punch sends our hero flying against the wall, but the kid is quick and manages to take one of the enemy's machine guns from the ground, points it at the monster and pulls the trigger. After the smoke from the burst clears, the truth is revealed: beneath the thin layer of skin, the man-looking thing is in reality a cyborg, a robotic frame with a weird alien-looking face placed at the center of the chest (reminds me a bit of Krang.. but way scarier). "METAL BEAST" shouts someone in a van, where Hayato and some lab staff are monitoring the whole scene via satellite. Apparently, this monster shares some traits with the metal beasts from Armageddon, only this one is human-sized rather than Super Robot sized. Anyway, Go understands he can't defeat the cyborg with the weapons at his disposal, so he tries to escape the menace, running at a sustained speed of 100 meters per second! (data provided by the scientists in the van) speaking of which, Hayato decides to let the fight continue and not help Go, thinking that this will be the perfect test to see once and for all if he's fit to pilot the Getter. Man, this is even more cruel than what Ryoma and Hayato had to do back in the day to prove their worth.. At last, Go reaches a construction site, and with the metal beast still following him, he decides to stop and stand against the monster, and counterattack! He finds some steel rods, a hammer and an axe, and starts charging at the beast throwing the metal bars as if they were javelins. The giant blocks some of the rods, but a few manage to pierce it and nail it to the wall, at which point Go jumps at him screaming and, with a vertical slice, cuts the head of the monster in two. The beast is not dead yet, though: some strange tentacles come out wiggling from the wounds on the metal carcass.. and right at that moment, when all hope is lost, a gigantic fist comes crashing through the walls and pillars of the building at amazing speed, punching with a final, devastating blow the remains of the metal beast into a gory pulp. A man is standing on the mechanical limb, looking at an exhausted Go. The boy asks:"Who are you?". The man on the arm answers: "My name is Jin, Jin Hayato. And from now on, I'll show you hell."

Getter Robot Go - Chapter 2 The second chapter opens up with an oh-so-cliché monologue from the main villain of this story, Professor Lando. And he looks even more stereotypical than you'd imagine, haha: long white beard, one-eyed, big robot horns and wierd fantasy-inspired robes. Imagine a mix between Doctor Hell and Emperor Brai from Getter Robot G, that's the evil mastermind here as I was saying, he's dispatching orders to his subordinate and telling to himself how great he is and how good world domination will feel etc. when on the main monitor the face of Hayato appears: Jin tells Lando he's just another delusional crazy basterd, and that he'll ruin any plans the mad scientist has in mind. Heh, I feel like this lil' chat was obligatory, right? Every super robot story has one, after all.
But what happened to Go? We see him right as he regains consciousness, in a helicopter surrounded by people he doesn't know, a bunch of dudes with rifles and a young woman with a katana. They tell him there's no time for explanations, cause in 1 minute they'll reach their target: a hospital. Why a hospital, Go asks. Whoops, too late they're already there and the soldiers have started killing the patients inside. Yup. And Go is just as dumbfounded as you probably are right now. He punches one of the soldiers, takes his gun and asks him why they're doing this.. and a moment later, a kid standing behind him transforms into an alien mess.. that's the only way to describe it, claws, weird membranes and 500 teeth: basically if you saw the Armageddon OVAs you know what I'm talking about, these are the same fukers.
Heh, guess what, Go decides to help the soldiers kill the monsters. The young woman is helping too, slicing and chopping up all the aliens that come near her. She tells go that what they're fighting are not humans, but instead human corpses that have been revived with the help of cybernetic implants: zombies. In fact, some of them start growing machine guns and rotating-barrel miniguns from their chests and arms, and Go is forced to take cover in a dimly lit room.. the zombie factory. Go turns around and is horrified at the sight of dozens upon dozens of big transparent canisters filled with liquid, containing a miriad of mutilated and deformed half-robotical human bodies, even children ones.
Go goes berzerk, he swears to himself he'll kill all of these monsters and tear the whole hospital down, but after a few seconds an enormous monster head appears in front of our group: a metal beast. Go and the others get out, right as the gigantic mechanism crawls out of the depths in which it was built. The young lady contacts Hayato and asks him to launch the Getter, Jin grants permission.. until a scientist (again, the whole battle scene is being monitored by satellites) informs Hayato that Go is trying to take on the metal beast by himself. Yes, we see him clinging as hard as possible to one of the monster's tentacles with one hand, while holding his rifle in the other, all while shouting "NOW YOU REALLY PISSED ME OFF!!!". Hayato is impressed, he wants to see to which extents Go is able to push himself.
So he cancels the Getter launch.

Getter Robot Go - Chapter 3Go runs and jumps from tentacle to tentacle, until he reaches the metal beast's cockpit. Yup, these monsters are piloted just like the old mechasaurus and oni beasts. Go tries to kill the pilot with his rifle, but the glass canopy is bulletproof and doesn't shatter.. thankfully the lady soldier has the solution, a rocket launcher! She fires one but, again, no major damage, just a small crack on the glass. But enough damage for Go to run into it head first and shatter it in a single it, hehe. The two kill the zombie pilot but, unable to operate the metal beast's intricate controls, they decide to destroy them. Unfortunately, as they soon find out, the cockpit only controlled the targeting system: each part of the beast has a mind of its own.. the giant monster starts destroying the city, and they can't make it stop. "Get ready to launch the Getter" says Hayato. The Getter Machines blast off from the mobile launchpads (those big-ass trucks you see in the Shin VS Neo ovas) Hayato piloting Getter Machine 1, with the other 2 jets in autopilot for the time being. Jin reaches ground zero and begins the combination sequence, forming Getter 1. The robot plunges onto the metal beast, and punches its way through the armor, crushing the enemy. With that out of the way, Hayato opens the cockpit and calls Go and Sho onboard (Sho is the girl's name, in case you didn't know), apparently the battle is not over yet. Indeed, it is not: the evil Lando has already sent a small number of bomber beasts to Japan, to take care of the new threat. Hayato and Lando have met each other before, says the professor to his subordinate "Hayato tried to ruin my plans back then, and he almost succeeded." We'll have more details about the background of these two characters in one of the next chapters. Anyway, the flying beasts have reached the mainland and have started bombing the city. With Go in the cockpit next to Hayato, and Sho sitting in the second unit, Getter Robot takes off to meet its new opponents.. Getter 1's special ability in the manga is the Plasma Sword. I think the anime version of the mecha has it too. However, Neo Getter from the OVAs has the Plasma Thunder attack instead. The energy blade slices through the mechanical enemies with ease, and the Getter returns to the base victorious. Hayato notices that Go hasn't fainted nor vomited a single time during the whole fight. Heh, of course not, replies Go: that was one of the best experiences he ever had in his life! - Well then, that's the end of the third chapter. Although, I'll admit I've already read up to chapter 11 (sorry, the story is so much.. better than the classic mangas that I just wanna keep on reading) but don't worry I'll try to write everything in here too, chapter after chapter as you can see from the image above, this Getter does not look like its predecessors: there's less anime magic (or manga magic) going on, so bits and pieces that are on the individual ships stick out of the exterior of the Getter in robot form too. You can see here, cannons are visible near the wrists and missiles slightly protrude from the shoulders. The same happens with Getter 2 and 3 as well. It's a welcome change, in my opinion. In super robot history Getter Robo was one of the mechas which required shapeshifting the most, it's nice to see that the author tried to tackle this issue in one of the newer series.

Aren't they called Getter Go, Getter Sho, and Getter Gai? Getter 1's special ability in the manga is the Plasma Sword. I think the anime version of the mecha has it too. In the anime, Super Getter Go (upgraded form of Getter Go) has a sword, the Sword Tomahawk, which is a physical/solid weapon.

Aren't they called Getter Go, Getter Sho, and Getter Gai? Not in the manga. Or should I say, not always. There are very few instances where the team calls the robot with their names during combination.. most of the time they use numbers. And even then, it was just for Getter Go. But that's probably because Getter Go was used 90% of the time. Yeah, I thought they'd use the Go Sho Gai designation too, but that's not the case for some reason. I've just finished reading the whole manga by the way, I'm just waiting for my pc to come back from the repair shop so I can continue the summaries
