This may be a stupid question, but why is it unfinished (no paint apps or color?). Thanks.

I'm an Architect. Love the design of the robots. Classic, especially.

Nice score - I really dig both Screwhead and Dive Dive. Yeah, Gobot toy collecting is an awesome pursuit in that there's a fair amount of second hand supply on the market and it tends to be inexpensive. With a little time and monetary commitment, getting a startup collection in good shape can happen really fast. Cheers, Coldiron!

The Daitarn transformation with 2 tank tread sizes (one set small and one set large) is actually anime accurate. The anime designers created Daitarn 3 to look 'awesome' in all three modes and presumably kept the possibility of emulating an anime accurate transformation in mind knowing that the character would be produced as a DX toy. As has been noted before, some anime transformations (such as any/all of the Getta Robo iterations) are physically impossible to achieve. Daitarn's 'parts forming' (the tank tread covers on the back that magically float over to become arm covers) are shown as part of the transformation in the anime: yes, they actually detach from the robot (mid-air) and reattach themselves in an alternative position. I guess we are to assume that this is a super-magnetic condition like Combattler V as opposed to a mechanical hinged condition like the Transformaers might've had. Regardless, the tank treads have a similar metaphysical reconfiguration. In robot and jet mode they are shown to be one third +/- their size on Daitarn's back. When changing into the Daitank, I beleive they flip down and then 'inflate' - not as a result of air being filled into a rubber container but actually change size from small to large (not unlike Apache Chief did on the Super Friends cartoon). Though it is physically impossible to recreate this transformation in the toy, the fact that Bandai is providing us with both sizes of tread does, in fact, make the transformation as close to anime accurate as possible. Just my two cents.

It's more the fact that the Protessor figure is absolutely tiny and that his folding arm covers are made of a single piece of crimped plastic. Incidentally, the Gordian package is really nice. Although the photos posted thus far make the Garbin figure look particularly washed out, in reality the blue is flat but it is a deep, rich flat blue. The range of motion on the Garbin figure is pretty impressive - most notably, the pivoting and bending knee joints. I must agree with 'themazingerz', though, about Protessor. I don't even want to pose him with weapons for fear of one of the arm joints shattering. The guy is tiny.

Yeah, it's really a shame that the MachineRobo license was so mismanaged in America. Tonka failed miserably on so many accounts when marketing these toys (from the big picture concepts - the laughable Hannah Barbara cartoon show; to the visceral fine points - like the mundane blister packaging and pedestrian transformation instructions). The toys are awesome and, as I've noted before, they stand as little gems in the realm of enigmatic chogokin - perfectly expressed in their anonymous identity (MR-##) and lovingly encased in miniature styrofoam sarcofogi. In an alternate universe and had the GoBot line been marketed more successfully, I think diecast robots (Godaikin and otherwise) would've had a profound impact on the American market and could have been the catalyst for better domestic toy production. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Transformers and all of that, but there's a distinct integrity about the MachineRobo line that the Microman/Transformers have never been able to touch.

Totally. Thanks for the advice. There's no shortage of loose gobots on the second hand market (and they're really cheap) now that I think about it. That's a great idea.

I've recently gone through a GoBot renaissance. I was underwhemed by the GoBot toys when I was a kid ( they paled in comparison to Transformers and even more so to Godaikin) but a few of the figures have apparently left a lasting impression on me and I've recently caved in to the desire to start collecting the MachineRobo series. That said, I've just started assembling my boxed machinerobo toys (only 4 thus far) but I also received a vintage GoBots 3 pack as an early Christmas Gift from my better half. This is an unpunched, carded collection including: Tank, Crasher, and JeeperCreeper (man, the names applied to these little jewels by Tonka were terrible). Anyhow, I'd like to open them but I don't know if keeping them in the original 1984-5 packaging supercedes my desire to play with them. Any thoughts? Is this package particularly valuable intact? Thanks and happy holidays RJ!

I know this thread is dedicated to Daitarn but I must say that the blueprints for Senshi Ninja Tobikage are really exciting as well. Looks like the set is going to include Kurojishi, Houraioh, and Bakuryu as well. Thank you Bandai.

Are there any QC issues (brittle, fragile, breakability) to be worried about with this figure? I have one of the first issue MF GGGG and it has caused me so much trouble I shudder to even mention it.

Great review Ed. Thorough, informed, and enlightening as always (though I risk sounding a bit trite in saying so). It's apparent from your avatar that Daibaron has a special place in your collection. Out of pure curiousity: why? Thanks much and great job keeping the Giant Robot spirit burning.
